Volume of monthly weather notations and line-a-day diary entries kept by Nathaniel Appleton, merchant and commissioner of loans, Boston, Mass., 1 Sep. 1788-31 Dec. 1795, with some gaps. Weather notations include wind direction and temperatures for each day. Brief diary entries describe Appleton's daily activities and travels; events at the family farm; visits with friends and family members; financial transactions; births, marriages, and deaths; and local, national, and international political events, including news of George Washington, John Adams, the French Revolution, and outbreaks of smallpox in Boston in 1792 and yellow fever in Philadelphia in 1793. Individuals mentioned include Appleton's wife Rachel Henderson Appleton; his brother John Appleton; his children Nathaniel Walker Appleton, John Appleton, Mary Appleton Emery, Thomas Appleton, Charlotte Appleton Perkins, Elizabeth Appleton Lane, and George Washington Appleton; and other Appleton family members. The volume is inscribed: "A Diary stating the Winds & Weather also The degrees of heat & cold by Farenheit's [sic] Thermometer placed in the entry of a House in Boston from 1 July 1788 to 31 Decem'r 1795 to which is annexed Occurrences of a public & private nature by Nath'l Appleton Vol. II." The first volume was destroyed in the Boston fire of 30 July 1794.
